It's the Little Things...

I think in the middle of a really crappy week, it sometimes feels like you are at the bottom of a very dark, very deeeep hole that you'll never get out of and that everything is shrouded in different shades of Evil and Annoying and basically life just seems bad for the moment.

And then Friday comes along and you melt into the weekend and you manage to completely dissociate from the last Really Bad week, and in retrospective you realize that maybe things weren't quite so Really Bad but maybe more Kinda Sucky and that you're gonna be OK. And then Monday rolls around and the whole process starts allll over again.

Anyway, in light of a Kinda Sucky week, I thought I would post some of my favorite, little moments, either from everyday life or from special parts of my past, just to remind myself that things are and can be OK because they have been before...and maybe also to remind you too :)

1. The smell of summer when I walk up the stairs. Can this be a scent? Does SUNSHINE and FREEDOM and WARMTH have a fragrance?

2. Dipping my feet into the sea which has the perfect temperature, and feeling warm and breezy and at the edge of the world.

3. The sting and rawness of my fingertips after playing the guitar strings too hard and for too long.

4. Hearing a song that hardly ever plays on the radio anymore come on at just the right moment.

5. Watching Nick's reactions to my favorite movie (HINT: He was into it.)

6. Waking up way too early to take advantage of a free breakfast in town, and then saying good morning to everyone who walks past.

7. Taking a selfie with a friend in a totally hip place, with the sun shining in our faces, with a really cool, polaroid camera.

8. Hearing a really pathetic, familiar story recounted by a friend and then laughing so hard that I have spasms on the floor (not surprisingly, there is photographic evidence of this moment that has fondly been named The Day I Died).

9. Talking about dreams (not the goal kind of dreams, like actual, going to sleep dreams) at 5 a.m. with my best friend and then casually announcing what "stage" of sleep we woke up in every morning after.

10. Good Times at the Movie Theatre (Subcategories: Breaking Dawn part 1- girl practically puking while running down the stairs, The Lion King Sing-Along Version- being the only people older than 5 in the theatre, The Lego Movie- little girl loudly announcing she has to pee just as there is a lull in the music, I Am Number Four- watching the villain put a spinning ball of razors into a guy's mouth and me actually screaming by sheer reflex, etc.)

Well, what are your favorite moments?

Love,
Danielle

Looking Back on 2013 and Reaffirming My Dominance on This Blog

So I thought, why not? I know it has been more than an acceptable amount of time since I've last posted, kind of like a silence that has way overpassed awkward and is dangerously bordering PANIC DEATH RUN, but this is my friggin' blog and I can cry (or disappear for months without a word and then come back randomly) if I want to.

So, my life. My Life.

Junior year guys. It's literally like being told you were going to Disney and then crash landing in the fiery depths of hell, lightly put. And I'm not gonna lie, it's been a struggle getting through these past couple of months with most of my sanity intact. And it's only been 1 semester so far, so you know, yay.

But that's not to say there aren't some great things about this year too. For example, I have a new French teacher this year, et peux-je dire que mon français est mieux, non?

I have also been slowly separating from some truly dying friendships these past couple months, downsizing my friend group quite significantly but also allowing me to get closer to those who remain.

This past 2013 year has been pretty fantastic too.

I've gone to dances and football games, went to my first tailgate, and was inducted into 4 honor societies.
I traveled to South America and watched my uncle get married, and learned how to say thank you in Portuguese (abrigado/a). Then I traveled to Greece and spent 3 weeks with friends and family, had my first Greek coffee whilst hanging out with my grandpa at the καφενείο, watched the sun set on the beach and then later spilled wine on myself, and ate Swiss chocolate in the Zurich airport (then proceeded to have an allergic reaction).
I discovered I am pro at eyeliner and painting, turned !sixteen! and had my first surprise party thrown for me, was a nun in a musical, then learned to drive and got my license.
I went to a French film festival and watched movies for 8 straight hours, worked out for a full summer (actually developed some !muscles! :O), and fell in love with Netflix forever.
I rode in a limousine all the way to D.C., went to my first prom as a reporter, stole much of my mother's old clothing, endured my LAST! P.E.! CLASS! EVER!, had a friend from NC who I met during my writing program come stay with me for a weekend, and then went contra dancing with strangers for the first time (it wasn't pretty).
I wrote almost 3,500 words for National Novel Writing Month (a personal best), finished putting together 3 photo albums, started my very own book reviewing column, wrote my first editorial for our print edition, and was voted French club Prez (for the second year!) and National English Honor Society Secretary.
I walked downtown in the rain, hosted a bonfire party, got to spend lots of time with my baby cousins during Thanksgiving (we had dance parties, made Indian headdress' and watched The Wiggles, be jealous), discovered the wonders of high-waisted everything, and had a picnic of Chinese food in a random wooded area.
I sunbathed on the top of a parking garage, talked philosophy into the early hours of the morning multiple times with multiple friends, saw wild horses for the first time, and went to a end-of-summer party where we set off fireworks in the street and then watched High School Musical while singing every song at the top of our lungs.
Watched Sixteen Candles for the first time, and then died on the floor laughing during the movie break.
Helped my grade win The Spirit Stick with a freaking awesome Homecoming hallway, went to two parties where we literally just watched The Lizzie McGuire Movie and listened to CD's from our childhood, and helped create my first paper as an assistant-editor-in-chief.
I saw 7 movies in theatres, read 15 books and listened to endless hours of new music (Honorable Mentions: Catching Fire, Warm Bodies, Sever by Lauren DeStefano, Looking for Alaska by John Green, Alt-j, Lorde, Icona Pop, Daughter, Bastille, Macklemore)

All that and more, sums up my 2013. I am one lucky girl folks, and 2014 is bound to be even more exciting, what with finishing up my last year and half of public schooling and growing as a person/writer/student/daughter/sister/friend/high-fashion model/professional rugby player/unicorn (and driver? Freedom, is that you?), and being able to officially see rated R movies ha!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday, and best wishes for the New Year!

Love,
Danielle
